support safe cycle lanes in didcot
Oxfordshire County Council is consulting on cycle lanes on Wantage Road between Didcot Community Hospital / Abingdon Crescent and Foxhall Road Roundabout. These lanes give separate space for pedestrians and cyclists, which is safer and easier for both.
The design is proven in Denmark, Brighton and other places. It has separate lanes for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The edge with the road is a short kerb that separates the cars, but you can ride on and off. (Cycling is still permitted in the road).
Why support these cycle lanes:
- People will feel safer to cycle without fear of traffic, and not just keen cyclists
- Cycle users won’t have to choose between busy roads and illegal pavements
- More cycling means less traffic, less noise and less air pollution, as more and more houses are built West of Didcot
- More walking and cycling is good for local shops and communities
- Eventually, a safe cycle route should go from central Didcot to Harwell village and Campus
